Ancient Rome Tour

Tour Overview

  • For many, this is the most exciting and interesting tour of Rome, primarily because it is so extraordinary and so unlike anything we experience today.

  • The 4-hour tour covers the adjacent sites: Coliseum, Palatine Hill, Roman and Imperial Forums - one admission fee covers all four sites. Alternatively, since there is so much information and history associated with each these sites, I could offer more in-depth tours of 2 to 3 hours covering any 2 of the sites as opposed to an overview of all, naturally upon request.

  • In brief, as many have said, we make the stones speak!! We turn these fixed, stone monuments to a moving, action-packed reality that once took place.

  • At the Coliseum, you will be enlivened with true stories of the games and gladiators: how they fought, won and lost. How the games were organized, the animal hunts, the comedy shows, the sea battles, everything and more. I will amaze you with details on its magnificent structure and stun you with amazing details of what transpired for 400 years in the largest amphitheatre in the world. An arena built solely to entertain the Romans, and what an entertainment—bloodshed and more bloodshed—a psychological substitute for hunts and a psychological preparation for war.

  • There is really no other way to understand, appreciate and enjoy the political, commercial and religious center of Ancient Rome than by taking you through and explaining the importance of the Roman and Imperial Forums. It is difficult and, I would not hesitate to add, virtually impossible to even know what you are looking at without a guide.

Once unveiled, the ruins break open ages of republican and imperial history, tradition, honour, justice, courage, discipline, debate, and religion – almost everything it takes to construct a great civilization, which began 3000 years ago. A purview of Roman history is vital - from its incipient stages to its apex and final collapse - to understand what transpired in Rome. I will outline and embellish with anecdotes of heroes, virgins, senators and ordinary people of the day. It is here you will learn about the Romans who changed the face of the world. Here you will hear about their most famous general, Julius Caesar, and most intriguing of all, the story of his death at the site of his burial. I wouldn’t miss it!

  • Palatine Hill, the best real estate in Rome, is not by accident where Rome was founded and the official residence of the Emperors. I will recount Rome's foundation legend of Romulus and Remus, and walk you through Domitian’s palace with a narration of how the emperors lived, dined and died.

  • Circus Maximus, synonymous with Chariot Races, held there for a millennium. It was featured in one of the most famous scenes in cinema history, Ben Hur, a classic that made Charlton Heston famous. Similarly I bring it alive with tales about how races were run, who ran them and why they became the most popular spectator sport of the day - more popular than gladiator fights and other spectacles of the time. A day at the races: Roman Style!
